Being in the same boat, the mothers at the nursery formed strong alliances. We lived in and out of each others houses, bolstering ourselves with bottles of wine; the kids sleeping anywhere and everywhere. We had lots of holidays together in the UK and abroad, and took the children to festivals. Bob took a job with the Rank Organisation who owned Haven Holidays. The children and I and our many friends were given free use of as many caravans on the Haven sites as we could utilise. We were often on holiday with 8-10 mums and twice as many children.
Despite our problems these were fun days. Amongst my peers I was extremely lucky in that my children had just one father whom they regularly went to stay with. For some of my friends, organising childfree time with various fathers was a nightmare. But there was no time that wasn't an excuse for an occasion. We had parties for everyone's birthday; went camping on beaches at weekends; dressed up for elections, halloween, Christmas, and when Watford football club played (heading from 4th to 1st division); put on pantomimes and plays; had endless bar-b-ques and dinner parties; had squid and brandy parties when anyone returned from holiday in Spain or Portugal; organised festivals in the local forest and generally enjoyed this special time with our young children.
