Cepheus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 1st century astronomer Ptolomey, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations.

Cepheus was the king of Ethiopia, husband of Cassiopeia and father of Andromeda.

NGC 188 is an Open Cluster of 8.1 magnitude. It is the nearest open cluster to the north celestial pole.
NGC 5946 is a Spiral Galaxy in which eight supernovae, more than in any other galaxy, have been observed.
