DEEP SKY OBJECTS M16 TO M20 |
Messier Number: M16
NGC Number: NGC 6611
Common Name: Eagle Nebula
Object Type: Open Cluster in Nebula
Distance in Light Years: 7,000
Constellation: Serpens
Apparent Magnitude: 6.0
M16 is an open cluster in Serpens at 6.0 magnitude, associated with the Eagle Nebula from which the cluster´s stars were formed.
M16 and the Eagle Nebula are seen best with low powers in telescopes. A 4-inch reveals about 20 stars in an uneven background of fainter
stars and nebulosity.
Three nebulous concentrations can be glimpsed under good observing conditions. Dark columns of cool hydrogen gas and dust can be seen
through telescopes of 12-inch upwards.

Messier Number: M17
NGC Number: NGC 6618
Common Name: Omega, Horseshoe or Lobster Nebula
Object Type: Open cluster in a diffuse nebula
Distance in Light Years: 5,000
Constellation: Sagittarius
Apparent Magnitude: 6.0
M17 can be observed with the naked eye under good conditions. The stars born within this nebula are, however, obscurred within the nebulosity.

Messier Number: M18
NGC Number: NGC 6613
Object Type: Open Cluster
Distance in Light Years: 6,000
Constellation: Sagittarius
Apparent Magnitude: 7.5
The M18 cluster is best observed in small telescopes which will show more than a dozen bright stars. At an estimated 32 million years old,
this is a fairly young cluster containing blue, yellow and orange stars.
|
Messier Number: M19
NGC Number: NGC 6273
Object Type: Globular Cluster
Distance in Light Years: 27,000
Constellation: Ophiuchus
Apparent Magnitude: 6.8
M19 is easily found at about 8º east of Antares visible as a small globular, elliptic glow, and is easily resolved through
telescopes.
|
Messier Number: M20
NGC Number: NGC 6514
Common Name: Trifid Nebula
Object Type: Cluster in diffuse nebula
Distance in Light Years: 2,200
Constellation: Sagittarius
Apparent Magnitude: 5.0
Another spectacular breeding ground for stars, the Trifid Nebula has a young star cluster near its centre. The red emission nebula is surrounded by a
blue reflection nebula.
