Melilla is a liitle known part of Spanish Morocco on the north coast bordering the
Mediterranean. It is clean, pleasant and affluent having benefitted from Spanish and EU subsidies. A convenient car ferry runs between
Malaga and Melilla.
Melilla's own income is from thousands of soldiers, contraband and some tax
free shopping. Less visitors come from mainland Spain than previously did, and the Moroccan police have become more
effective in stopping illegal importation of goods from Melilla.
Melilla is a great mixture of Spanish and Moorish architecture and atmosphere. The old city and the fortress out at the sea
are the greatest tourist attractions. The market area is also very charming. |
