Moorish Castle, Gibraltar

Moorish Castle on Gibraltar
Moorish Castle on Gibraltar

This imposing Moorish castle was built during the 12th century under Arab occupation by Abdul Memen, caliph of Morocco, and reinforced during the 14th century. It stands on the north of Gibraltar, overlooking the city and bay.
The Tower of Homage is the best preserved section of the castle, next to which there are some smaller towers and castle walls.

Originally the castle was a large fortified complex with three different enclosures. The highest housed the Tower of Homage and casbah, lower was the Old Town and lowest of all an area called La Barcina with a shipyard and Sea Gate, subsequently replaced by the Gates of Casemates which once bordered the sea.
