Benamargosa lies 37 kilometres from Malaga and 14 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, on a flat area at an altitude of 100 metres surrounded by small hills. It is situated within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Avocado, and has a population of 2,000.
The village is of Moorish style with narrow streets and white-washed houses. The main products of the municipality are citrus fruits, olives, vines, avocados, mangoes and chirimoyas.
There are, as always, several bars and restaurants in the village but one of particular note is Los Arcos. Its appeal is in the ambience and background music and a choice of Spanish and English cuisine. The tapas are excellent and, for the British residents, the English breakfasts and Sunday roasts might tempt.
The parish church of La Encarnación was built in the 16th century incorporating Gothic and Baroque features. |
