There is a fantastic range of rental accommodation available in the Axarquia region. You can find something for every budget; from a cheap flat in a village center to a luxury villa in the countryside with a pool and lush gardens full of lemons and grapes. If you are booking from the UK you can use any of the usual websites like Tripadvisor and Holiday Lettings. If you are already here then you will find local rental businesses, estate agents, local magazines, and various Facebook groups have lots of options.
Reliability: Casas Rurales
Anyone used to be able to get away with advertising their property for rent in Spain and as a result, some pretty poor quality properties were available at very low prices. Recent crackdowns (encouraged by the envious hotel industry) have raised standards and all properties that are actively advertised now have to have things like air-con and a source of heating for the Winter.
For the best quality and facilities look for properties that have obtained the official ‘Casas Rurales’ status. These properties are also fully insured and legally registered and will be employing local people and paying their taxes. As a result, they will be insured and the electrics, water, gas lines, etc will meet legal standards. You will find on the following link a good selection of Casas Rurales in the Axarquia and Malaga area.
Go Local
It is a good idea to choose a local specialist as they will have the best range of accommodation in this area and they will also know exactly what the pros and cons of each property are. An amazingly cheap villa on booking.com looks great until you arrive and realize it is a long way out of town on a windy track!
Things To Consider
Are you going to hire a car? If not then the location of your rental accommodation will be crucial. You can’t be too far from a supermarket as you will have heavy water (and probably wine) to carry home. In some villages, local supermarkets will provide home delivery services so this is an option but make sure you check you can get this service before you book. Don’t underestimate how hot the summer days are. A walk that would be simple in the UK could be very uncomfortable if not outright dangerous in the Spanish summer sun. Also bear in mind that most rural roads do not have footpaths. If you are hiring a car check out the parking situation at your accommodation; is there available on-street parking and for villas is there shade and plenty of room for safe parking and turning?
Views. Views vary at each location so if a sea view is important to you make sure you choose accommodation with a good one. Inland locations can still have good sea views due to the fact the Axarquia generally rises from the coast. Many properties will also have stunning mountain and valley views too. If you want a village property you probably want a terrace with a view. Some village properties have tiny terraces or their views are blocked by other buildings so make sure you know what the situation is before you book. For rural villas, you want to make sure you have views and some privacy.
Shade / Cooling. The summer temperatures can reach 40C and more so shade is important if you are going to want to sit outside comfortably. Inside and you will need air-con or ceiling fans.
Noise. Towns and villages in the Axarquia are usually quiet and there are restrictions on noise from bars and restaurants. Note these noise restrictions also apply to you so you should not be making lots of noise and playing loud music after 11 if you are in a village. It is quite common for the local police to come round and put a stop to any noisemakers.
