Benamocarra
Benamocarra is a typical Moorish village with narrow streets and white-washed houses where widows still wear black but, poolside, the young wear very little. Remains of Moorish settlement can be seen near the Well of Luchena. The wonderful light, picturesque streets and spectacular flora are an inspiration to artists. The village has all facilities including shops, banks, a health centre, primary school, restaurants, bars and a village swimming pool in a beautiful panoramic setting.

Village Street in Benamocarra Benamocarra boasts the usual number of Andalucian fiestas. The first major fiesta of the year is Carnevale when everyone under forty gets into fancy dress. The streets are full of young men dressed as women and schoolchildren disguised as goblins and witches. In springtime there is an annual Romeria when girls in frilly dresses dance the Sevillana while young men gallop about on horses showing off their riding skills.

Later in the year there is a festival of Music and Culture with free canapes and drink and a well reputed painting competion for a prize of several thousand euros. During this festival the streets of Benamocarra are devoted to performances of different musical types. There are concerts of classical music in the 500 year old church, popular music and jazz music and groups of traditional Axarquian medieval costumed players.

These contrast with the several religious festivals when candlelit processions wind their way through the streets and up to forty men carry figures of Jesus and Mary on flower bedecked thrones, shoulder high. All occasions, whether sacred or secular, are accompanied by travelling fairs and firework displays. Details of Benamocarra´s festivals can be found at the fiestas link at the bottom of this page.
