From the N-340 take the turn-off to the Nerja Caves. At the entrance to the car park take the track on the left which starts by a pine tree. The path ascends between low hills and young pines on the right of the Barranco de la Coladilla de los Cazadores, an area recovering from a forest fire.
After about 2.5 kilometres there is a fork in the path where the right-hand leads to the Cortijo de La Civila via the Cuesta de Romero. The path to the Fountain continues to the left passing through pine trees, box woods, palmettos, rosemary and juniper bushes with the Barranco on the left and the Cerro Mangueno on the far side with a fire break along its crest.
Less than 2 kilometres after La Civila fork, and after passing the old rubbish dump, we come to the recreational area El Pinarillo with picnic tables, BBQs and drinking water. Continuing on, across the Barranco is the Fuente del Esparto, named because of the abundance of Esparto Grass here used in the making of ropes, basket and espadrilles.
The distance to this point from the N-340 is approximately 6 kilometres.
An alternative route would be to walk along the Barranco de la Coladilla, gaining access from the N-340, through greenhouses towards the old Fabrica de San Joaquin and following track that starts behind this factory. Close by is the Acueducto del Aguila (Eagle´s Aqueduct), built to carry water to the old sugar factory. The track passes by a ravine on the right and close to an old quarry. A little further on you descend into the ravine into the Barranco.
