Every year the beautiful Pueblo Blanco of Competa hosts the annual night of wine (Noche del Vino). As with all events around here big or small, the official programme is released frustratingly late. However, luckily the festival follows the same basic pattern just with slightly different performers.
Program
1) 11.00am Mass in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption. Parochial Church Our Lady of the Assumption. Almijara Square.
2) From 1pm – the afternoon events all take place in Plaza de la Venidimia. The town put up huge shades from the buildings so you have some protection from the sun. There is a procession of grape pickers and traditional musicians and singers in traditional costume. There is a symbolic crushing of grapes to celebrate the harvest. There is a variety of music and dance and sometimes a Zumba presentation. There is free wine and migas with grapes from 3-4.
3) From 10pm the night time celebrations start in Plaza Almijara. There is a huge stage and lots of seats set out as well as seating in the bars and restaurants on the square. It will be packed so book a table and expect to pay a deposit to reserve it. This is deducted from your bill at the end of the night. There are loads of speeches and awards that will be of no interest to a tourist so if you are not eating don’t get there till around 11.30 to midnight. There are 2-3 flamenco singers and then one or two flamenco dance troupes (about 2 am).
