M16 is an open cluster in Serpens at 6.0 magnitude, associated with the Eagle Nebula from which the cluster´s stars were formed.
M16 and the Eagle Nebula are seen best with low powers in telescopes. A 4-inch reveals about 20 stars in an uneven background of fainter stars and nebulosity.
Three nebulous concentrations can be glimpsed under good observing conditions. Dark columns of cool hydrogen gas and dust can be seen through telescopes of 12-inch upwards.
