The area around the town of Sayalonga is the main producer of Medlar Fruit (Nisperos) in Andalucia. The harvest of the fruit has been celebrated for more than eighty years in the form of a festival held annually in Sayalonga at the beginning of May. This is a fun festival which combines the agriculture, gastronomy and folklore of the area. Read more about the fruit and find some recipes here.
During the day you can taste the fruit, jams and other dishes using the Medlar as a base, and discover the local sweet Sayalonga wine and dishes typical of the region. One particular speciality is Calabaza Frita, a dish inherited from the Arab culture. The bars and restaurants are open all day and there are additional stalls lining the streets, catering to the many visitors.
All day long you can watch and listen to performances of flamenco and regional artists and join in with the singing and dancing. On the stage in the main town square there are rondallas (ancient dances) and groups of musicians and dancers who perform fandangos and sevillanas.
